?What I like most about Photo Editing is you are able to experiment with your looks without going to a beauty parlor. It is fun seeing your photo with unique effects especially comparing it to before and after results.
I will show you how to change hair color but you need to have Adobe Photoshop. It is the leading graphic editing tool used by novice to expert graphic artist. I am using Photoshop CS3 Extended .jpg)
. It doesn’t really matter if what version you are using as long as it is Photoshop. If you don’t have one yet, you can download it from different sites providing free downloads but buying the CD is much safer from virus. I don’t want to recommend a download site because most of the sites carries virus.
Now, Let’s begin by opening your Adobe Photoshop . In the upper left corner, click the FILE menu and click OPEN. Browse the location of the photo you want to edit.

Now, we are ready to start the editing. As shown in the screenshot below, right-click to the Background layer and click ‘Duplicate Layer’. You may now type in “Hair Color” to the Duplicate Layer pop-up window.

As you can see, there are already two layers in your window tab. I always practice duplicating the original layer in all of my work just in case something will go wrong in the middle, I can easily go back to the original photo without repeating the whole work all over again.

Make sure that the ‘Hair Color’ is the one being highlighted in your layer tab. Now click the brush tool in the left menu icons.

Adjust the brush size using ’21 soft round’. If it is too small or too big for your picture, you may choose a different size as long as it is soft rounded.

Here are few short cuts that I want you to remember:
- Press Q = Quick Mask Mode
- Ctrl Alt Z = Undo previous action
- Ctrl + = Zoon In
- Ctrl - = Zoom Out
- Ctrl Shift I = Inverse
Press Q for a quick mask mode. Start by outlining your hair until you fill in all the area. You can use the short cut above in doing this. Change brush size to go over thin areas and you may use the eraser just 2 icons below the brush icon if you overlapped.

After filling all the areas, Press Q again to leave the Quick Mask Mode. Now we can see that there are selections surrounded in the image but what we only need the hair to be selected. Press Ctrl Shift I (or you may find it in Select Menu in the upper portion of your screen, then click Inverse) to inverse the selection mode.
Click the Bucket Icon and Choose the Gradient Tool.
At the upper left corner, click the button of gradient fill color selection and select your desired hair color.
Reduce the Fill and Opacity of the ‘Hair Color’ layer. Just do an experiment it will depend on how it looks on your photo.
Just use the Undo (Ctrl Shift Z) short cut to go back to previous action if you want to try other colors.

I did not edit anything in my face but my hair is already edited. As you can see my profile photo is the same pic as the pic i used in the tutorial. It's the magic of photo editing.

Great-it takes a little time (and you made it easier) to master photoshop
I just don't have enough time to use Photoshop. I'm content with using the paint function of windows, Picasa or Microsoft Office Photo Manager for editing my pictures. They're fast and not resource hungry. But I do know Photoshop works better in graphics. Great tip by the way. :-)
Hi Kristina, Let me be the first to give you a thumbs up on an excellent PhotoShop tutorial. I'm a professional freelance photographer and the tutorial you created here is excellent in every respect. I couldn't have done a better job on it if I had done it myself and I mean that sincerely. The only thing I don't understand is why you would want to do that to such beautiful hair. You have my vote on this one.
